Abstract

Effects of the moisture content in high purity gas on friction characteristics of carbon fiber filled PTFE was investigated by pin-on-disc tests. Results showed that the coefficient of friction responds sensitively to changes in the moisture content. Analyses of transfer films by Raman spectroscopy showed that carbon film became thin and homogeneous when the water content was small, and it was confirmed that the carbon film became thick and inhomogeneous when the moisture content is large. It is suggested that the carbon film on the surface was activated by moisture in the atmosphere.
